Description
The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve is a critical emissions component that has been standard since 1961, when California first mandated it. This valve helps remove unburnt hydrocarbons from the crankcase and routes them back into the engine to be burned, reducing harmful emissions.
Many technicians and customers find the PCV system confusing, but it’s essential for proper engine operation and compliance with emissions standards. Older cars simply vented gases directly to the ground, causing pollution and engine issues, but today’s PCV system relies on a controlled valve, usually integrated with the vacuum system, to safely recycle crankcase gases.
Understanding and servicing the PCV valve ensures cleaner engines, better performance, and adherence to environmental regulations—making it a small part with a big impact.
